- In this unit I learned that Imperialism is when a strong nation take over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political and cultural life. I found it really interesting that aboriginal people were forced to go to Residential Schools. they suffered a lot. children were physical, metal and sexual abused, there was loneliness and even hunger at the school. children were punished for speaking their native language. One concept that I am still having difficulty with is the six nations confederacy. One skill or learning strategy I found useful was SOAPS (Subject.Occasion,Audience, Purpose and Speaker). SOAPS is a useful strategy to use in analyzing source material.
Part B: Early Economic Globalization
Europeans developed an economic system called mercantilism. under mercantilism, government controlled international trade to increase their wealth. Capitalism is similar; it is an economic system designed to increase the wealth of business people. Increased manufacturing leads to industrialization, which occurs when the major economic activity of a country shifts from agriculture to manufacturing. Imperialism in the 19th century, European countries took over vast regions of the world.
Part C: Impact of Imperialism
Imperialism is when a strong nation take over a weaker nation, it is also known as the Empire Building or colonialism. Controlling its politics, economics, culture, wanted more power and more resources are all motivation for imperialism. The Scramble of Africa is when Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and Great Britain were fighting over Africa's land and resources.
Part D: Legacy of Imperialism in Canada:
TS: negative legacies that imperialism left in Canada.
F: For example, parts of the government systems and laws came from the people who were before, including the English and French.
O: This shows that part of Canada is still now controlled by the English and French.
F: Another example is that the idea that one race is superior to another, and therefore has the right and duty to control others fortunes.
O: This shows that Indigenous peoples were mistreated.
CS: Therefore, legacies that imperialism left in Canada are negative and racist.
Part E: Connection to Globalization
The European missionaries concluded that the sooner they could separate children from their parents, the sooner they could prepare aboriginal people to live a civilized lifestyle.
Residential schools were established for two reasons: separation of the children from the family and the belief that aboriginal culture was not worth preserving.
